Chapter 32 - Road Tripping to Northern Minnesota

Hi,

Chapter 32 is a short one that is all about a 3-day road trip to Northern Minnesota.

On July 29, we started our trip with a bike ride from Nevis, a quaint town with a population of 400, to the even smaller Dorset, home to just 22 residents. The Heartland Trail connected these two small communities, each offering a surprising number of bars and restaurants despite their size.

The following day, July 30, we explored Bemidji, famously known as the "First City on the Mississippi River." The city, situated by Lake Bemidji, boasts a historic downtown area and iconic landmarks like the Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox statues, which add a playful nod to local folklore.

We were surprised to see there is a lakefront city park on the Bemidji State University campus.  There were a ton of students in the park and in the water during summer break.  We thought there would be more trees in Bemidji, but our 16-mile bike ride around the lake revealed a mix of wooded areas and  busy highways.  

Our next stop was International Falls, a unique city straddling the U.S.-Canada border, known as the "Icebox of the Nation" due to its notoriously cold winters.

This was a huge Smokey the Bear statute in Smoky Bear Park.

On July 31, we arrived in Ely, which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. This gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) exudes quaint charm. Ely’s downtown is filled with delightful shops, cozy cafes, and distinctive restaurants, reflecting its welcoming atmosphere.

I thought the 4 panels depicting the seasons on the tree was very creative.

We also explored the Kawishiwi Falls Trail, where the falls cascade dramatically over rocky ledges, showcasing the raw beauty and power of nature.

Welcome to Chapter 39 of Crabby & Chipper Travels! After a fall spent cutting, splitting, and stacking 43 cords of wood with my mom (yes, forty-three),  it was definitely time for a getaway. What a challenging process!  Vietna m really makes you work for that stamp. But they were finally got approved the morning we left, so we felt a huge sigh of relief when we left home.   The Journey to Hanoi From our front door to our hotel in Hanoi: almost  37 hours with  two layovers (San Francisco and Taipei, Taiwan).  Our very first impression when driving to our hotel?   Scooters. SO MANY SCOOTERS. Hanoi has over 9 million people and about 7 million motorbikes , and I’m convinced we saw all of them within the first hour.  In some places, they even have  their own  traffic lane....

Chapter 36 - Viva Las Vegas!

Starting our hike in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Welcome to Chapter 36 of Crabby & Chipper Travels ! On March 6, 2025 , we jetted off to Las Vegas for a six-day adventure to celebrate our friend Justin’s 50th birthday —plus squeeze in some time with Corp’s cousin Dave and family. We kicked things off with a two night stay at the Golden Nugget —Justin’s pick.  We were excited to give him his birthday gift - LED-lit, flashing dollar sign sunglasses. He wore them proudly!  We quickly learned how to play electronic blackjack on the bar and were able to get some free drinks along the way.  At the stroke of midnight, Justin made a last-minute bet: $100 on red at the roulette table—and he won! They were both all smiles after the roulette win! Although it was too cold for a swim, the Golden Nugget’s pool area was still fun to check out thanks to its giant aquarium full of sharks . Chapter 38 - Broadway, Cheesecake, and Comedy in NYC

Greetings from the Big Apple! Welcome to Chapter 38 of  Crabby & Chipper Travels ! On July 29, we headed out on a last-minute 8-night trip to New York City—one of our favorite destinations in the U.S. 7/29 – Arrival + Comedy Club We landed in New York and checked into our tiny Pod 39 hotel room—cozy would be a generous description.  Our room was 149 sq. ft. in size.  Just enough space for a queen size bed, desk and private bathroom. The room might have been tiny, but the bedroom window had a view of the Chrysler Building. And the bathroom window had a view of the Empire State Building. It was a sweltering 99 degrees, but we didn’t let that stop us. That night, we caught our very first NY comedy show at the New York Comedy Club.  We were able to get tickets at the last minute.  The headliner wasn’t Corp’s favorite..too much crowd work. 7/30 – Central Park + Murray Hill We spent the morning walking through Central Park.
